荷毕先生很仰慕邻居喜尔福太太，但一直羞于表达。有一天，他发现喜尔福太太很烦恼自己养的乌龟长不大，便想到一个妙计。荷毕先生写了一个咒语，要喜尔福太太一天念三次给乌龟听，内容为『喂咕呜，喂咕呜，点大点大变……』（也就是将『乌龟，乌龟，变大点大点！』倒过来念，即书名来因）。之后，荷毕先生蒐购大量和喜尔福太太的乌龟长得很像、但尺寸不同的乌龟回来，并制作一个可以抓乌龟的工具，每星期都偷偷用抓龟器调换一个比之前大两盎司的乌龟，让喜尔福太太很开心自己养的乌龟真的长大了！但是，后来喜尔福太太却又烦恼乌龟长得太大了……到底结局如何？实在让人意想不到哦！
