《21世紀英語專業系列教材‧普通高等教育「十二五」規劃教材：與西方文化》不僅是宗教文本，也是西方文明的一大淵源和基石，它以顯性或隱性的方式存在於幾千年西方文學、藝術、文化、政治和意識形態中，其重要性在我國改革開放後便逐漸得到了共識。除了從宗教、歷史和《聖經》與文學、藝術的關係開展學術研究，發表文章和專著外，20世紀90年代中期我國高等院校同歐美高校一樣，也開始設立了《聖經》課程，這是有深遠意義的舉措。歐美高等院校自上個世紀80年代開始普遍開設《聖經》的文學、文化闡釋課程，其目的是為了挽救這部經典在年輕一代人中間逐漸失去的影響，因為不熟悉《聖經》他們就不可能理解從喬叟到喬伊斯的整個西方文學作品和藝術，就意味著西方文明傳統將在未來年月喪失殆盡。一句話，開設《21世紀英語專業系列教材‧普通高等教育「十二五」規劃教材：與西方文化》闡釋課程對歐美國家來說是維護傳統的大事。我國開設相關課程的目的自然不同，但也是當務之急，因為以新興大國出現在世界舞台上的中國必須真正瞭解西方的思維邏輯、行事準則與方式。要達此目的，我國民眾，特別是高校學生就必須熟悉《聖經》。當然，不同於歐美類似課程，我們主要是普及性的任務，授課程度比他們淺顯得多。
