內容簡介

Drawing on his own childhood experiences in rural Illinois for inspiration, Edgar Lee Masters wrote Spoon River Anthology as a collection of 214 epitaphs written in free verse, portraying the lives of small-town people, from judges and doctors to poets and drunks.

The voices of the dead comment on those still living to eerie, haunting effect. As they remark on each other and how their fates have intertwined, their voices amount to one of the greatest expressions of early twentieth-century America. It has been said that Spoon River Anthology was Masters’ revenge on the small-mindedness and hypocrisy of his small-town background, giving vent to his sense of indignation at personal and social injustice. But he also achieved much more than this, creating a work of enduring importance and resonance in American poetry.
Spoon River Anthology moved Ezra Pound to comment ‘at last America has found a poet’. It is now available in this freshly edited edition.
