　講文學史或許相對簡便一些，想要獲得的資料大多可以通過各種文學史書查到，而「唱」文本則難度較大，因為詳盡剖析詩歌文本的專著恐怕是鳳毛麟角。只有不斷閱讀，廣為涉獵，長期收集，才能一點一滴地將有關資料積累起來。在往日的教學實踐中，我也曾注意收集了不少零零散散的資料。我想不妨把它們整理一下，結合自己的理解，通過註釋形式寫出來，作為英語詩歌愛好者的參考。在這裡，有必要重複一下本人對於註釋的一點看法。註釋一般都本著簡明、適度的原則，只有在絕對必要時才加注，因為繁瑣的註釋可能干擾或影響讀者的閱讀。不過，在教學實踐中，深感我國學生要讀懂英語原詩，無論在語言、音韻或內容上，確實都還需要較為詳盡的註釋。對語言和音韻等方面的註釋似乎較易解決，而涉及主題或內容時就困難得多。因為詩是具有多義性的。
